A touch of Miami in Milton Keynes!
26th November 2007
This is the house known as ‘The Daily Mail’ house in the middle of Wolverton, a very Victorian town in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.
The house was built in 1932, and the older neighbours in the street still refer to it as the Daily Mail House. It seems a Mr Brown bought the plans at the 1932 Daily Mail Ideal Home Show and constructed the house to those plans. The detached house as the photograph shows, still has its distinctive 1930’s Crittall steel curved glass windows; inside it has curved moulding around the doors and skirting and a feature curved wall in one of the rooms.
The present owners, Rae and John moved into the house in 2003 after driving past the house many times and hoping one day they would live there. They say, ‘We love living here, its fun and a bit different and our dream is to create a family home with a touch of Miami.’
John is originally from Mauritius and Rae has a love of dance and theatre and both feel that the house is perfectly suited to their outgoing personalities. So far they’ve made minimal changes. “We made small steps by planting banana trees in the garden and selecting brave colours for the rooms. Some might call it Miami mixed with a touch of camp but we just want to have fun.”
“We are looking foward to doing up the rest of the house but it might take a few more years yet!”
