How to layer lighting in 3 simple steps
Embarking on a renovation project, it can be tempting to think about lighting as a finishing touch, or a simple decorative decision to be made at the end. However, lighting has the power to make or break a room and allows you to get the ambience just right, so it’s important to factor it in right at the start of a project when you’re thinking about overall layout.
Take time to think about:
● Where the natural light falls
● Where in the room you’re going to be doing certain things (such as prepping food or enjoying cosy drinks at an island)
● And importantly, how you want to feel in the room.
Layered lighting is about combining different kinds of light to create the atmosphere that you want while emphasising different aspects of the space. Layers could include general, ambient, decorative, task and accent lighting, and each plays its part in creating the perfect ambience.
Choose what works best for you according to how you’ll be using the space throughout the day and night, and how you want to feel in it. For example, downlighters can be used as task lighting to highlight a kitchen island during a busy cooking session, whereas wall lights fitted on a dimmer switch will bring a cosier, ambient light that’s perfect for unwinding.
Decisions around lighting can be difficult to make up front when you’re looking at plans or empty spaces, but by taking the time to map out your lighting carefully, the finished result will be a home that works for you in all the right ways.
